From Angela Bah:
When I moved to this house in Montreal Road in 1982 I kept receiving mail for a Mrs A Plank. I was very interested to get this link about an incident at 76 Islingwood Street which took place on 9th February 1912, and also a possible link to Mrs Annie Plank.

Letter from the Evening Argus - February 1999 -

"Re: Carlton Hill Tunnel.
I was born off Carlton Hill in 1920 and lived there until 1942. We were told as children there were old tin mines under Sussex Terrace and when Apollo Terrace collapsed into the back gardens of Sussex Terrace it was said it could have been caused by the movement in the old mines below. I recall the photograph in the Argus but cannot remember where the entrance was ..."

Recent e-mail to Hanovernet:-

"I recently bought the book named above. (see Hilly Laine to Hanover) Mainly because I lived in Southover Street from 1968-1997. I wanted to learn more about the history of the area I grew up in. I found the book really interesting. It made me want to "go walkabout". Re-living all my old memories and even make a few new memories.
As a child I played on the streets in and around the area. Even from the sixties and seventies most of the area has changed from when I ran amock on the "dump" as we used to call it. It was the area of derelict houses in between Newhaven Street and Lewes Street. Where the estate is now built, near the Bricklayers Arms pub.

I grew up in the Golden Cross Pub, now known as The Geese have flown across the Water. Or something like that. Daft name if you ask me. I searched and searched the book to find reference to 16 Southover Street. But to no avail.
I know 15 was a bootmakers and reference was made to someone living in 17. But 16 - nothing. So this is why I'm contacting you. Maybe someone who visits this site may know what the Golden Cross used to be before it was a pub. I've heard it might have been a Bakery. But not sure if this is correct. Sadly my parents have both died, Chas and Laura Smith, so I cannot ask them. It's a long shot but someone who visits your webpage may be able to help. I would love to know a bit about the history of my old home.

Regards, Sharon Terry (nee - Smith)"
