Back to the Local History section Here are three of the fascinating black and white photographs from the book. |
The Victorian oven in the basement of a house in Montreal Road, Hanover. These houses were built in 1865, and one side of the road have front gardens, which is unusual in Hanover. | |||||
The Home for Penitent Females, Finsbury Road, which was demolished to make way for the modern flats which stand there today. This home started life as a shelter for 'reformed' prostitutes, but became a home for unmarried mothers, and continued as such until the 1960s. |
Above, Richmond Dairy Farm in Victorian times. All that remains is the farmhouse and cowshed (see below) now mostly obscured by bushes. |
"Edward Tilbury Esq. owned 27 perches of land which was occupied by Obidiah Dray in 1851, he had a cowstall, stable and yard and eight cows. This was later to become Chate's Richmond Dairy Farm." |
On the right, the farmhouse as it is today. Below it is a steep bank, which is marked on maps as a quarry, but may have been a tin mine at one time (see local history). The tunnels below may also have been used in wartime. Below, the farmhouse and the rest of Richmond Street in 1998. |
