Silent Calls - If you have been driven mad by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent Callguard Service on 0870 4443969. These calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls.
Also, register your phone number/s at the telephone Preference Service website www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ which will take your number off the list that cold-callers use to sell you things.

Free directory enquiries - log onto www.bt.com and follow the link to Directory Enquiries (bottom left of page). You can search online for free, using the same database that the Directory Enquiries operators use.
Also, save money by phoning real numbers not 0870 national rate - www.saynoto0870.co.uk - find the real number of the company you want to phone - this prevents the company making money from keeping you waiting for ages on a national rate number that they receive revenue for.
