This video commissioned by the Parliamentary Education Unit to produce a video to explain the work and role of Parliament to students aged 14 to 18. This video is intended to complement the new curriculum subject Citizenship at Key Stage Level 4 and Politics AS / A Level. This video is now finished and will be shown to students visiting Parliament and also marketed to schools as a teaching resource early in 2002. |
We have structured the programme into six individual films. Each of these six ten-minute films in Parliament Uncovered takes you behind the scenes of the British political system, with stimulating interviews from those who work within the system. The films deal with specific aspects of Parliament, a brief synopsis of each film can be found below. | ||||
People, politics and Parliament - a basic introduction to Parliament; looking at the importance of democracy and the organisation of the British parliamentary system, introducing some of the key figures within it and learning about what they do. A good foundation film - essential viewing for newcomers to British politics. |
Get Yourself Elected - a documentary style film following three candidates on the run up to the General Election 2001. It examines what motivates the candidates, their campaign tactics and the all-important result. A film full of fact, fun and tension, that reaches the personalities behind the political rhetoric. |
||||
The Work of the Lords - this entire ten-minute film is dedicated to promoting a better understanding of the Lords, a House which, although not as powerful as the Commons, holds a very important and pivotal role within the parliamentary system. A focussed and informed film about the role, membership and reform of the second chamber as described by Members of the House themselves. |
Inside Westminster - a punchy, film that confronts head-on the debate that surrounds tradition and reform. This film explores the tension between the purpose and role of ancient parliamentary procedures and the necessity to reform and modernise them. With interviews from Mr. Speaker in the grand surroundings of the Speaker's house to a young MP - Stephen Twigg in the London Eye - Inside Westminster questions Parliament's relevancy in the twenty first century. |
||||
It Matters to Me - a dual purpose film which aims to educate the audience about the role of your local MP and how they can work for you, as well as explaining the passage of a bill through Parliament and MPs experiences of the legislative process. An involving film that highlights how Westminster and Parliament can work for an individual; no matter where they live in the UK. |
Giving Evidence - an action packed film that tackles the work and role of an aspect of Parliament that is not particularly well known - Select Committees. This film features hearings held by the House of commons Select Committee for Culture, Media and Sport's investigation into Wembley football stadium and the staging of the World Athletics Championships in 2005. Plus interviews from committee members and a witness. |
